Mirena® is a hormone-releasing device that is inserted into the womb. It is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy for up to 5 years. After its removal its effect is immediately reversible and pregnancy can occur immediately.
Mirena® is suitable for the treatment of heavy periods, or periods that are painful. Women enjoy using the Mirena because periods are typically lighter or absent (a situation that is desirable for some women and helpful to treat anaemia, endometriosis and heavy periods).
Mirena® can be used in both women who have had a child as well as women who haven’t.
